Gentles - Nation (Metal Postcard)

From Australia, Gentles were responsible for one of my favourite releases last year - Soft Hands - so it was with great sadness that I heard about the passing of lead singer Brendan Parkes earlier this year.

This album, then, will be the final release from the band in its current form and you can hear tracks on it in my August show for both Dandelion Radio and FSK. Gentles are an indie guitar band with a difference, adding a quirky non-conformity that's seen them compared with the likes of The Fall and Swell Maps.

I'm not clear yet whether Gentles plan to continue without Brendan or whether they'll sound quite the same if they do, but this release is an excellent finishing point for their - and his - legacy, seven guitar-based sounds that are perfectly rounded yet fit in more than enough jagged edges to surprise and challenge.
