Freak Slug - Amulet (Future Classic)

I

I missed an opportunity when I did that interview for the J-Card Podcast recently. When Alexei asked me what I associated with the word 'Manchester', instead of burbling on about football then reeling out a few names from the accepted Manchester canon, I should have mentioned that my favourite Manchester band at the moment are Freak Slug.

If this, their debut album, has a more refined feel than they displayed in that early gig I saw them at (and instantly fell in love) and their first album I Blow Out Big Candles, 'refined' isn't really the word that would come to mind without that comparative context. Perhaps it's just the stoner feel that comes through on this album, the acerbic attack clothed in an IDGAF glove as opposed to the bare knuckle energy of previous recorded outings.

All that matters, anyway, is that it's damn good. I'm playing the magnificent Penny Drop in my FSK show this month simply because, when I recorded it, it was my favourite track. I think that honour goes to Wishing Bone now, which is why I'll be playing that in my Dandelion show next month. 'Incandescent and dreamlike,' say the sleeve notes, which I suppose is a good enough description if your dream visions are the kind that follow a delightful bash to the head.

Get it as CD/vinyl/download here.
