London six-piece Twat Union have drawn many comparisons: from the playful eighties indie of Fuzzbox to the energetic riot grrrl bands of the early nineties. In truth. there's a bit of both about them but, crucially, they add a lot that's all their own. Amongst the well-directed rage, there's a joyousness and humour that goes well beyond anything than the (admittedly brilliant) Bikini Kill ever offered but there's a fair dollop of seriousness behind the theatrics.
This new single is a case in point: for Twat Union, a commentary on body standards is wrapped up in a celebration of watching television in a bikini, which takes on an extra edge in this hottest of British summers making it, for me, the single of late summer. There's no chance of the excessive heat diminishing the power of this sextet who, whether on record or on stage, never ease off on the energy even when the lyrics deal with the undoubted joys of ignoring the oppressive temperatures and lazing around indoors.
If you didn't manage to catch Twat Union at one of their festival appearances this year, they're doing a one-off show with the also-excellent Problem Patterns at the Lexington in London on 10 October.
You can hear the single here in my FSK show this month. Also worth checking out if you've not done so already is their Don't Blame The Peach mini-album released earlier in the year and available here.
